Movie love: Silent House

I've been spending some much needed quality time with Netflix this weekend and amongst the typical, not so bad movies that I've watched was a gem that I had overlooked up until now.

Silent House, starring Elizabeth Olsen the incredibly talented sister of the the Olsen twins was FANTASTIC. I wasn't expecting much from it, aside from excellent acting by Olsen which I've come to expect from her, she has yet to disappoint me. It turned out to be the one of the most thrilling films I've ever seen. It. Was. So. Good.

It's actually a remake of a Uruguayan film called La Casa Muda, which I'll definitely be checking out soon. What really set this film apart was the "real time" sequence and the effect of using a single camera, which is also in the original film. This means that you are with the main character, Sarah (Olsen), the whole time that she makes her way through the plot and it unfolds in a time sequence that is realistic to how it would actually happen. Which just amplifies the terror.

The plot begins with Sarah, her Uncle and her Father cleaning out and repairing an old property that has been abandoned and broken in to. The house is boarded up in an attempt to avoid further break ins and this makes is difficult to escape when unusual things start to happen.

I realize that this sounds silly. It's not. I'm leaving SO much out because it's seriously incredible and I hate spoilers. I actually wouldn't even file it under the "Horror" genre because that's limiting it immensely. Maybe if there was a "psychological thriller with elements of horror, excellent acting and brilliant camera work" genre, it would belong under it.

I'm sure it will come as no surprise that this movie is graphic. You should definitely check it out!!!
While you're at it, you should also check out Martha, Marcy May, Marlene to see more Elizabeth Olsen brilliance.

If you've already seen it, what did you think?

  1. Oooo I'll have to watch this. I saw her in Martha Marcy May Marlene and loved her acting! Horror is one of my favorite genres so I'll make sure to watch this before my monthly movie recap! Thanks for the recommendation!

  5. I'm not sure if I want to see it D: I really love horror but only the good kind. Usually that's foreign so I may watch the other one first. I still want to see Elizabeth Olsen though....

I'm not really a fan of movies that mainly rely on the darkness and loud music to scare viewers. Hopefully this is not just that.

    1. Well, oddly enough, there's no music in this at all. It's all the sounds of her moving around. I'm not sure about the original though. I totally agree, I can watch cheesy horror movies but I only get really crazy about really good ones. I really think this one is at least worth checking out.
